What to Wear for Fall Family Photos in Texas

Fall sessions in Texas come with a plot twist: the calendar says October, but the thermometer often says summer. Here is how I help my families look cozy and coordinated without melting.

Start with a palette, not matching outfits

Pick three or four colors that love each other and let everyone wear a different one. My favorite fall combinations for our locations: cream, rust, and sage; camel, ivory, and soft denim; or mustard, chocolate, and dusty blue. When the family coordinates instead of matching, photos feel warm and collected rather than uniform.

Mama picks first

Choose your outfit first and build everyone else around it. If you feel amazing, it shows in every frame. Long, flowy dresses move beautifully in the open-field locations and photograph like a dream at golden hour.

Texture beats logos

Knits, linen, corduroy, ruffles, and suede add depth that flat cotton cannot. Skip the graphic tees, neon colors, and big logos; they pull the eye away from faces.

Plan for the heat

• Think light layers: a cardigan or jacket for the first few shots, easy to shed.
• Put kids in breathable fabrics and bring a change for the car ride home.
• Sessions happen in the last golden hour, the coolest and prettiest light of the day.
• Bring water and a small towel; happy, comfortable kids make the best photos.

The quick checklist

• Three to four coordinating colors, one per person
• Mama feels incredible in her outfit
• Texture over logos
• Comfortable shoes for walking, cute shoes for photos if you like
• Outfits ready and steamed the night before
